How can i make my kitten eat?

We picked up a 6 week old kitten from a newsagents on Sunday.The previous owner said that he eats kitten food. We have tried him with water, kitten milk and dry and wet food mixed, he will drink milk and a little water but not eat at all. He is otherwise healthy and very inquisitive.
